Delta, Colorado
Nestled among the adobe hills at the southern base of the majestic Grand Mesa lies Devil’s Thumb Golf Club. Located in the foothills north of Delta, not to far from Grand Junction, the course is named for the rock formation that looms above it. “The Thumb” stands alone as a sentinel watching over the Grand Mesa, the Uncompahgre Plateau, the confluence of the Uncompahgre and Gunnison Rivers and the small western town of Delta. Off in the distance, one can see the Raggeds and West Elk Mountains to the east, and the San Juan Mountains to the south. Designer, Rick Phelps, described this challenging 18-hole course as a “prairie style” Delta golf course. Opened in 2001, it has five sets of tees that make the course playable to every type of golfer. Many holes offer different options, split fairways and well placed bunkers make it an interesting combination that seems to change the course each time you play. You’ll pause for a moment while antelope cross the fairway and you know in that instant that you’ll want to return again and again.
